Programs at Amarillo College's School of Cinematic Arts at Sharpened Iron Studios

Motion Picture Production AAS

The Motion Picture Production AAS prepares students for positions in the motion picture production field through a 60 credit program.


In this innovative hands-on program, students perform every function necessary to complete films: scriptwriting, producing, shooting, editing, managing, and serving as crew. Students will refine their skills through the rigorous application of their craft in advanced areas of theatrical, feature, and documentary film production. Upon graduation, students can pursue careers in all levels of the film industry.

Motion Picture Production Certificate

The Motion Picture Production Certificate prepares students for positions in the motion picture production field through a 24-credit program. 


Students completing this program will have the necessary skills and knowledge to qualify for entry positions in film and related industries. In this innovative hands-on program, students perform every function necessary to complete films: scriptwriting, producing, shooting, editing, managing, and serving as crew. Students refine their skills through the rigorous application of their craft in advanced areas of theatrical, feature and documentary film production. Upon graduation, students can pursue careers in all levels of the film industry.

Screenwriting Certificate

The screenwriting certificate is a 16-hour program that will introduce students to the fundamentals of screenwriting through lecture, workshops, and peer critique.


Using the elements of character development, objectives, scene beats, conflict, obstacles, premise, tension, emotional through-line, and act structure, students will write a short screenplay, taking ideas from concept to final draft.

Film/Media Production AAS

The Film/Media Production AAS prepares students for film and media performance careers in motion picture, broadcast, and web-based productions. During this 60-credit program, students will have the opportunity to develop their technical performance skills through hands-on training and performance opportunities in a variety of professional productions.

Film Performance Certificate

The Film Performance Certificate Program is a 18-hour program which allows the student to build acting tools to stretch their abilities as they attack more difficult problems through situations that are foreign and unfamiliar.


Recognizing and understanding the subtext of a scene is explored as students examine the texture, tone, and timing found in contemporary and classic scripts to bring subtle nuances to their performances. This program is designed to develop craft both artistically and technically for acting on film. Students will also analyze scenes, practice continuity, deal with on-set challenges, and learn how to arrive on a set fully prepared without any rehearsal.

Broadcast Media Performance Certificate

Learn the art of broadcast media performance from professionals in the field that will lead you to
success. Develop skills in video content, analyse news for broadcast situations, and perform as an announcer for radio, television commercials, and industrials. This 16-credit program will provide students with a professional outlook on communication in modern society.
